SAMH Nook Volunteer FAQs

I’ve never volunteered before - is that okay?

Absolutely. You don’t need previous volunteering or work experience. We welcome people who are trying volunteering for the first time. Everyone has something to offer, and you’ll never be expected to know everything from day one.

Do I need special skills or qualifications to volunteer?

You don’t need any qualifications. What matters most is your interest, values, and willingness to get involved. We’ll provide training and ongoing support to help you feel confident. We recognise that everyone has different skills and experience to offer.

How much time do I need to give?

We’re incredibly grateful for the time you can give us. Ideally, we’re looking for a minimum of two hours or more per week on a weekly or semi-regular basis. This will help us effectively plan and support the team and visitors to the Nook. There is no obligation though. We will always be flexible and appreciate that your circumstances can change.

What if I can only do evenings or weekends?

Great, we need you! The Nook runs drop-ins and activities across the week, including evenings and weekends. We will always try to work out a time that is suitable for both of us.

What if I’ve had a break from volunteering, work, or study?

That’s completely fine, many volunteers have gaps for various reasons. We value lived experience just as much as formal experience.

Do I need to have a “clean” record?

We do ask for a PVG check for the Nook volunteer roles, but having something on your record won’t automatically exclude you. We know people’s journeys can be complicated and recovery is possible.

Our decision will depend on the nature of the volunteer opportunity and the circumstances and background of any offences.

If you have declared convictions in your application and/or something is on your PVG which we believe is relevant, we will discuss this you and an assessment will be made. Any information you declare will be kept confidential and processed in accordance with Data Protection legislation.

If you’re unsure and want to know more about this before applying, feel free to speak to us confidentially.

Do I need professional references?

No, if you haven't got professional or work references, we can also accept references from people who know you well and are not related to you.

This could be:

  • A support worker, teacher, or youth worker
  • Someone you’ve worked or volunteered with in the past

We’re happy to help if you’re stuck for ideas.

I’m worried I might not “fit in”?

We’re building an inclusive and welcoming space, and we want volunteers from all backgrounds, cultures, ages, and experiences. Whether you’re neurodivergent, LGBTQ+, part of a minority community, or have lived experience of mental health – you belong here.

Let us know what support you might need to feel comfortable – we’ll do our best to make it work.

Can I ask for a reference?

Yes of course, but we would have to know you well enough in a volunteering capacity to be able to do this - especially if your reference is related to regulated work.  Please speak to us before putting us down as a referee.

Will Volunteering affect my benefits?

Generally volunteering doesn’t affect rights to benefits, but it’s a good idea to check this in advance depending on your own personal circumstances. Please find some more information here on volunteering and benefits.

I’ve missed out this time, when will you be recruiting again?

For the opening of the Glasgow Nook, we are looking to recruit around 15 volunteers. Please don’t feel disheartened if you miss out this time. We will be recruiting again soon as we continue to expand our volunteer team.
