Redhall Walled Garden is a georgian walled garden on the west side of Edinburgh, on the banks of the Water of Leith, sitting within the beautiful Colinton Dell.

Since 1983, Redhall has been providing a supportive working environment for up to 50 people who are recovering from mental health problems. People come from a wide range of backgrounds and for a variety of reasons. Hours of attendance at Redhall are a minimum of 3 days per week. A day runs from 9.30 a.m. to 3.30 a.m. We do realise that people may be very low in stamina at the beginning of a placement and we will pace the work they engage with accordingly. Redhall offers people the opportunity to help develop a centre of excellence in the fields of horticulture, conservation, IT, administration, training and mental health awareness. The chance to contribute is very important to the people who attend Redhall. They want to be able to use the service but also to build it, maintain it and teach other people about the lessons they’ve learnt. They want to give something back, so we encourage everyone at Redhall to have an opinion on everything that happens and to take as much responsibility as they feel ready and able to accept.

'Woodhenge' at Redhall

Although much of the activity at Redhall appears to be of a practical nature, the real work is going on subtly beneath the surface. We have to create conditions for growth and positive mental well-being: to create a safe place for people to be and to unfold, often at a time in their life when they are experiencing great distress.

It involves creating a culture of hope - that recovery is possible for everyone. As a group, we can hold the hope for people when they have none, allowing people a space where they can learn new skills and build a life that is free from dependencies, sustainable , rewarding and of their own choice.
